Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists identify what their clients want to be able to do in their daily lives and collaboratively come up with ways for them to achieve these goals.

What is Occupational Therapy?

An Occupational Therapist (OT) identifies what their client wants to be able to do in their life, as well as the barriers they face in doing so, and collaboratively comes up with ways for the individual to achieve their goals.

Our Occupational Therapists and our Speech Therapists work closely together.

An Occupational Therapist (OT) looks at what someone wants to be able to do in their life, as well as their strengths and barriers, and collaborates with them to establish ways in which they can achieve these objectives. This may range from a task such as teeth brushing, through to being employed at a workplace and all the details that need to be considered to make this possible.

This usually starts with an assessment of the person’s abilities and their environments. Occupational Therapists might engage in therapy to help the person achieve their goals through gradual and progressive skill building, or they might help the person to explore options and obtain relevant assistive technology that could help them participate effectively in whatever it is they wish to do. Assistive technology could include things like wheelchairs, specialised beds, computer software, reading devices, shower chairs or small things like adaptive cups and cutlery.

How can we help?

We work with clients to help them realise that they can achieve more than they currently are in their daily lives. Through the implementation of physical therapy, as well as technological and other innovative solutions, we can help to increase both mobility and a greater sense of independence.

Assistive Technology

Sometimes the person’s home, school, or work environment might need modification to remove barriers to a person with a disability, and the occupational therapist can design and apply for these as well.
