Occupational Therapy & Home Modifications
Occupational Therapists identify what their clients want to be able to do in their daily lives and collaboratively come up with ways for them to achieve these goals.

What is Occupational Therapy?
An Occupational Therapist (OT) identifies what their client wants to be able to do in their life, as well as the barriers they face in doing so, and collaboratively comes up with ways for the individual to achieve their goals.
Our Occupational Therapists and our Speech Therapists work closely together.
An Occupational Therapist (OT) looks at what someone wants to be able to do in their life, as well as their strengths and barriers, and collaborates with them to establish ways in which they can achieve these objectives. This may range from a task such as teeth brushing, through to being employed at a workplace and all the details that need to be considered to make this possible.
This usually starts with an assessment of the person’s abilities and their environments. Occupational Therapists might engage in therapy to help the person achieve their goals through gradual and progressive skill building, or they might help the person to explore options and obtain relevant assistive technology that could help them participate effectively in whatever it is they wish to do. Assistive technology could include things like wheelchairs, specialised beds, computer software, reading devices, shower chairs or small things like adaptive cups and cutlery.
How can we help?
We work with clients to help them realise that they can achieve more than they currently are in their daily lives. Through the implementation of physical therapy, as well as technological and other innovative solutions, we can help to increase both mobility and a greater sense of independence.
Assistive Technology
Sometimes the person’s home, school, or work environment might need modification to remove barriers to a person with a disability, and the occupational therapist can design and apply for these as well.
Different services that we offer at Blue Wing Care Professionals include:
- Functional capacity assessments
- Therapy (both paediatric and adult)
- Assistive technology prescription
- Assessment and prescription of home modifications
- Vehicle modifications
- Sensory assessments and sensory diets
- Manual handling assessments and programs.
We go into homes, schools, group homes, day programs and any other environment a person may need assistance in.
Home Modifications
Home modifications are changes to the structure, layout or fittings of a participant’s home that enable them to safely access and comfortably navigate areas they frequently use.
Home modifications may be included in your plan if:
- Due to the impact of your disability, you or your carers cannot reasonably access and use frequently used rooms and spaces in your primary residence;
- Your primary residence, in its current condition, has significant and adverse impacts on the sustainability of current living and care arrangements; and
- A suitably qualified Occupational Therapist has performed an assessment and recommended home modifications, considering all possible alternatives, including the use of equipment
As with any building work, there are laws and regulations that need to be adhered to when undertaking home modifications under the Scheme.

How can we help?
Blue Wing can help alleviate anxieties by making modifications to your home that allow you to continue living in it, with independence and safety. Modifications may include handrails, widened doorways and installation of ramps, as well as bathroom and kitchen alterations.
Our home modifications make your home safer, easier to move around and better suited to your current and future abilities. We can help install assistive technologies such as standing tables or automatic door openers. A home assessment can help identify areas to modify or improve your home, and from there we can tailor our service to suit your needs.
These options include:
- Subsidised modifications
- Ramps, mobility aids and handrail installation
- Bathroom modifications
- Doorway widening
- Advice on home modification options
